24-year-old Haitian American soccer player who recently returned from the FIFA world cup On Friday July 18th was honored by Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie at the Waterstone Resort and Marina on “Jozy Altidore Day.”

According to Sunsentinel,

Fresh from attending the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles, Altidore was back in his hometown. On Friday, he was honored by Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie at the Waterstone Resort and Marina on “Jozy Altidore Day.”

“He is our hometown hero,” Haynie said. “He has achieved so much in his sport and that certainly deserves acclaim from the community. We are all very thrilled and honored of him carrying the name of Boca Raton as his hometown.”

“The first I heard of this it was incredible,” Altidore said.

“It’s such a prestigious city in Boca Raton. I’m so happy to be here and represent the soccer team.

Altidore was joined by his family upon receiving the proclamation from Haynie. Altidore’s stay in South Florida will be short. He leaves late next week to rejoin Sunderland AFC of the English Premier League. His success competing in Europe has played a significant part in his growth as a player. He was the 2013 Futbol de Primera Player of the Year and the 2013 U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year. He currently holds the record for most goals by an American overseas with 39.
